The Unglamorous Truth About Being an Entrepreneur

When I first stepped into the world of entrepreneurship, I imagined freedom, fulfillment, and—if I’m honest—a bit of glamor. But five years in, I can say this with certainty: it’s not glamorous at all.

Some days feel like a never-ending uphill battle. And while the beginning was hard, there was at least the spark of curiosity, the rush of learning new things, and a hopeful sense that everything would work out if I just kept pushing. Ironically, even though I’ve sharpened my skills, the journey feels heavier now. More complex. More isolating.

The Moment Everything Changed

My love for graphic design is what led me here. But what made me really commit was something that happened at 18. I was working as a porter, lifting and moving heavy merchandise. One day I injured my back on the job. I could barely stand, yet both management and HR expected me to keep working.

There was no support, no concern, just the expectation that I’d continue like nothing happened. I left to seek treatment. I had to walk into a local clinic, receive injections and muscle relaxers, and spend months recovering. To this day, the discomfort hasn’t fully left.

That experience changed everything. I made a promise to myself: I would never again sell my health to people who didn’t value it. I would build something of my own, something I believed in.

The Fight to Keep Going

Since then, I’ve given this dream everything I’ve got. I’ve seen wins. I’ve had growth. But truthfully, I’m still far from where I want to be.

Any entrepreneur will tell you—this path is exhausting. You start wondering if maybe everyone’s right when they tell you to find a plan B. It’s hard when you’re pouring yourself into something and it still feels out of reach.

But still, there’s something in us that won’t stop. Even when we’re tired, burnt out, or riddled with doubt, we keep going. There’s a stubborn fire that won’t go out.

We’re Built Different

Entrepreneurs are wired differently. While others sleep, we’re up chasing ideas. Even when nothing makes sense, we hold on to the hope that one day it all will.

So if you’re discouraged, if your dream feels far away or even foolish—don’t give up! Rest, but don’t quit. Refocus, but don’t settle.

Because when one of us gives up, it chips away at the belief that dreams can become reality. And I still believe they can. That belief is what gets me up in the morning.

Keep going. You may feel lonely but you’re not alone.
